elements Zinfandel (Sonoma County) 2013

Slightly bricked plum and garnet hue with aromas of too much alcohol, skewing the fruit that is there. Rustic, crushed, dried black berries, with a fresher fruit scent above the rim. Palate--Baked dark berry pie as first impression, on a juicy foundation with a robust beam of intense and thickish fruit cream with an underlying blueberry note.  I grabbed this today at a State liquor store that I frequent when I am out of town. It was $8 from a list price of $24 on what the store calls their "Outlet Buster Buys." Occasionally their ridiculously low prices are due to a wine being very close to it's perceived "end of life" but still enjoyable. Others are just unreal bargains. This one made a three hour trip home being jostled around which really can effect a wine.  On top of this it is much too warm when I poured it.  I only bought three bottles which I may regret but for now the jury may be out. *I will review another in a few days when it has come to a better temp

Scarpetta Frico (Bianco) 2015

Nice golden hue with aromas of tropical fruit compote, baby powder, creme brulee and a slight touch of citrus, Palate--Steely front with good acidity, a bit austere, with mixed tropical fruit and a fairly quick finish. Friuli is the extreme northeast part of Italy. This is a crisp and minerally wine which a lot of people will like. I am not crazy about it but that is just preference. I must have picked this up for a song (Maybe $6) just to see what it was like.  At that price, and iced down real cold, it could be a fresh Summer quaff. You're likely to find it for Around $10. So if that's your think raise a glass. For my liking I would have rather have a nice Gewürztraminer or Mosel Riesling.

Pipoli Aglianico Del Vulture 2016

Nice hue of cranberry jelly, with Raspberry aromas and lightly twinged with licorice. Palate--Nice first impression of well integrated, bright fruit with plenty of balanced savory spices, and chewy tannins. I can't remember what I paid for this, but I bought two bottles which means it was on a great sale. This is a really delicious Aglianico and I would buy more in a heart beat so raise a glass!

Ben Marco Expressivo 2015

Richly deep nearly black hue with aromas of ripe blackberries, cigar ash, spice, spring flower floral notes on the edge, Palate--Full bodied, rich texture with big dark berry flavors with loads of savory spice. Finishes with a rich and lasting finish of more of the same with a end of creamy dark berry bonbon. This Mendoza Malbec blend has 17% Cab Franc and is hard for me to tell apart from a mid range Cabernet which is why if you love good Cabernet Sauvignon, you will love an upper class Argentinian Malbec.   I paid $18 for this and its a gem so raise a glass.

Carlos Serres Rioja 2015

Pigmented dark garnet with aromas of savory spiced cherry with red grapefruit Palate--Nice mouth filling flavors with a bright beam of cherry berry and a floral touch of sweet spring lilies. I opened this two days ago and just couldn't get to reviewing it so this is not as accurate as it would have been.  I was impressed when I opened this 5 year old Tempranillo and wanted to get to the review asap but well, I was cooking and couldn't get to it. Right now the wine is out of the fridge so it is too cold to really appreciate but even at that, it is a really delicious quaff. I don't remember what I paid for this but I tend to buy only bargain wines so I am sure it was $10 or less.  This is a great buy and I will be picking up more if it available so raise a glass!

Scotto Old Vine Zinfandel 2015 (Lodi)

Deep, nearly black hue with aromas of subdued fruit with unsweetened Baker's chocolate with rustic savory spices and a touch of sweet pie spice. Palate--Thickish texture, with big bold first impression of intense dark berries, silky tannins, and espresso on the finish that lingers with more blackberries trailing. This is a Trader Joe's value Zin costing a crazy $8.50.  This wine will hold for several more years but is drinking just fine right now.  I f you love Zinfandel you will love this so raise a glass.

Fallen Bridge Zinfandel (Lodi) 2017

Really young hue of vibrant dark purple with aromas of lush ripe dark berries, a touch of cocoa, lovely sweet spices, with more sweet fruit above the rim. Palate--Rich textured fruit with a nice tar and pipe tobacco flavor, with blueberries, blackberry with a long lingering finish. I did not like the first impression as the bouquet struck me like a garden variety sourced blend of over ripe fruit. But this is a for real Zin. I picked this up reluctantly for $8 and  had to take 9 bottles. (A long boring story) I was bummed but am now quite happy!  Raise a glass!
